If you’re well acquainted with your yoga practice, it’s about time you learn Ayurveda.
While yoga is known as the science of inner well-being, its sister science of Ayurveda is known as the science of life. Thousands of years old and developed by sages in India, Ayurveda remains one of the most powerful holistic health systems to date. With a focus on an individuals unique constitution, Ayurvedic medicine offers practitioners specific healthcare routines, diets, and perspectives to help bring the body, mind, and spirit into an optimal place of balance. If one were to ascribe a goal to Ayurveda, it would be to consistently return to one’s individual state of equanimity.
In Ayurveda there are three main doshas, or energies that relate to a person’s makeup. They are blend of physical, mental, and emotional characteristics. Each one of us has all three doshas within us, but one or two tend to take prevalence. The doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—derive from the elements. Since our inner and outer world’s are in a constant state of flux, knowing our personal dosha composition gives us the opportunity to make food, lifestyle, and self-care choices that will best support finding balance and a sense of peace.
Ayurveda and Modern Cuisine
A major part of Ayurveda is the mindful choice of the foods we eat. What makes Ayurveda different from other philosophies of eating is that one person’s most supportive diet may be the exact opposite for someone else. There is no universal “right” or “wrong” there is simply the ask to educate oneself on what would be most healing for the heart, body, and soul, and to make the appropriate choices.
Chef Meredith Klein, founder of Pranaful as well as a mindfulness teacher, is no stranger to the individualized approach to eating. Chef Meredith found her way to Ayurveda through the yoga practice which came in tandem with her love of cooking. Once she had found which combination of foods supported her, she began a successful journey back to healthy digestion and overall sense of well-being.
As a private chef who works a lot in the empowerment space, Chef Meredith believes that food is medicine and that each of us can heal ourselves if we heal our relationship with the foods we eat. She believes that it is essential to know why we are eating the foods we choose and how they are affecting our bodies in order to fully thrive. Meredith’s cooking blends Ayurvedic principles with contemporary taste buds, to ensure a delicious and satiating experience for the body, heart, and mind. No matter which dosha(s) takes precedence, every person who experiences Chef Meredith’s cooking can feel the care and attention that goes into every aspect.
